Alex Ewerlöf joins Sebastian Heide-Meyer zu Erpen and André Neubauer to challenge a popular claim: that coding is solved. Alex is not anti-AI. He works with agents, local and cloud models, and an engineering harness of his own. But he argues that generating code is only one part of software engineering. The more consequential work is understanding the problem, setting the risk bar, verifying behavior and remaining accountable for what reaches production.
The conversation explores why deterministic feedback loops make stochastic models useful, why ownership requires knowledge, mandate and accountability, and where AI-assisted development belongs on the spectrum from disposable prototypes to safety- and business-critical systems. Alex also shares his current workflow, his reliance on context and skills to warm up agents, and his concern that indiscriminate cognitive offloading could make teams less capable over time.
